Slow typing & response randomly in URL box

I have IE 6.0 on XP-home SP2, 128 bit, installed on a Dell Optiplex P4.

I have a problem wherein about 70% of the time characters go extremely slow
into the URL bar as I type them (about 1 second between chars as I type - it
very slowly catches up to me). Furthermore, when it does this, the mouse
pointer will disappear for 2 to 4 seconds. But as soon as it comes back to
me the Internet Explorer is fine, and continues to work fine, until a
reoccurrence of the problem.

If I set the home web page to 'Blank' I get a bit better result because the
Explorer is not trying to attach to anything when I go into it, so I get the
slow down about 40% of the time. Furthermore, if I continuously open IE,
type into the URL, then close it, I notice that the slow down comes and goes
intermittently.

I've trying stopping all 3rd party software on the machine (McAfee,
Zonealarm, etc, etc) - and it still has the same problem. I thought I'd
uninstall IE and then re-install it, but I understand that can't be done
because it's integrated into the Operating System. There is nothing else
wrong with my IE - it works fine for everything except that it has this
frequently intermittent problem.

So what can I do to solve this? Any ideas appreciated.
