Lately it takes much longer than normal for desktop icons to appear. When they do, the text under each icon has a color, rather than transparent backround. Selecting 'show shadows under menus' under effects -appearance-display properties has no effect

Ideas?

For the slower startup: Start> Run> MSCONFIG
On the startup page, eliminate unnecessary items. Keep essentials and
convenience items that are used everyday. For the rest, try to disable them
using the program's own settings. If not possible, then uncheck them in the
MSCONFIG tool.

Also, while not needed often - don't forget to take care of disk
maintenance. Use Disk Cleanup and run Defrag.

For the desktop icons: You already have the setting in Visual Effects
covered. Right click the desktop and select Arrange Icons By... to be sure
that "Lock Web Items on the Desktop" is not checked.
