Slow Start Up

In a hurry the other day my partner very kindly offered to
collect my iPod from its docking station... unfortunately
he just switched off the computer at the base unit and now
start up is extremely slow, as is the internet. Can
anyone help, please?

Partner? :)

Turning off the computer through just about any method is not going to
make everything run slowly unless somehow there was a short in the
system or something happened that would be hardware based. Improper
shutdowns can harm the hardware, but the software shouldn't really
matter. If you want, you can try reinstalling Windows or even all of
the drivers, but I have a feeling that either your computer has some
junk on it that is making it run slow or you have a hardware failure.

Yes parter... in other words, my b/f!

Now... that is not good news, do you have anything else to
brighten my day?

Didn't mean to offend you with the partner thing. Just don't see that
word very often :)

I would suggest using Ad-Aware from www.lavalys.com to check for
malware. Use the online antivirus scanner from www.antivirus.com or the
one at mcafee.com. I would use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel
to remove anything that you no longer need or don't want. Use Disk
Cleanup (Open My Computer, right click on the drive, click Properties,
click Disk Cleanup) on each drive you have in your system. Then
Defragment your drives (will help a little bit with performance, but not
as much as some may claim and it will not "fix" system problems either).
To do this, Open My Computer, right click on the drive, click
Properties, click the Tools tab, then click Defragment Now, and defrag
all of your drives. Now see if that helps with your problems ;)

No prob!

Have done most of what you suggest, contrary to popular
belief i'm not a complete f*ckwit where it comes to
computers!

Will try the ad-aware thing though - already have it so
shouldn't be a prob.

Would you mind if i came back to you if it's still not
working?

Thanks

Sure you can come back, and I'm not sure who here believes you are what
you said. We do have a few people who simply live in newsgroups to
insult others, but this is usually because someone did the same to them
and now they want to make others look bad.

One other thought on the internet though, is this DSL, Cable, or dialup?
You may want to power cycle the modem (if DSL or Cable) by turning off
the computer, unplug the ethernet cable from the modem, turn off the
modem, unplug the power source for a good 5 minutes, then plug it back
in, turn it on, then reconnect the ethernet cable. This is more of a
hard reset than a simple reset button on the back of the modem. If this
is a dialup modem, you may want to contact your phone company to check
the lines for noise and quality.

Finally, you may want to try Everest Home from www.lavalys.com to find
out what components you have in your computer (if you don't fully know
already) and it will also provide you a link to the latest drivers for
everything. I would suggest downloading and installing at least the
latest chipset (motherbaord) drivers and video card drivers.

You're a star, thanks very much. Haven't tried it yet but
endeavour to tonight, however, you know how it is, when
it's not working you don't want to go near it!
