Slow SMB ; fast FTP

I consistently get about 1.3MB/s transfer rate when using SMB based
transfers from one pc to another connected via x-over cable.

When I use flashfxp I can get sustained 7-8MB/s transfer rate.

Anyone know why the SMB protocol slows you down so much?

Both run xp pro
512+ ram
xp 24/2800+

Really hoping someone can answer this one. I have a similar problem
but with a twist

Got a new machine with built in gigabit, set it up and file transfer
(SMB) across my home (wired) network work peachy. Tried to ftp to on
of these machines and OMIGOD was it slow. Figured it was a bad buil
in, so I grabbed a Linksys 10/100 and stuck it in there and FT
started working with the expected rates... But the SMB transfers o
THAT card are painfully slow!

So, without doing ANY tweaking of any sort, the gigabit has great fil
transfers and horrible ftp, while the 10/100 is the opposite

The machine has SP2 on it...Any ideas from anyone??
