Bruce

I have a ASUS A7V8X Motherboard with a 1.8 G AMD Athlon CPU
512 mem
37G Seagate IDE (used 8.7 g)

I just did a CLEAN install of XP and it takes over 3 mins for the OS to
load!!!

Why?
How can I get this to speed up?

Thanks
Bruce

Any other programs installed yet? If so, they may be set to start every time XP starts-up and you may be able to use msconfig to disable the offending programs

HTH

Just Office....
Not yellow ! in Device manager either...
I have pretty much stripped all hardware except the Matrox Video out.
I did JUST install Mcafee. but the problem was there before....

TIA

Remove Mcafee, and see.
I think you need a new computer.

I have the same problem with W2K and W98SE and Norton, with old
computers. That's the bussiness.

Try removing any cd drives as well. I had a similar problem. Turned
out to be a bad cd writer.

Your PC should speed up very quickly considering the spec. The H/D is
small, old and slow, but not that slow. It's probably a UDMA 33.

Make sure you have installed any chipset drivers that are necessary
for the motherboard.

Using Bootvis as suggested would be a good idea, but I have not found
it helpful in the past.

As a test, remove all hard drives and CD drives, except the one
holding Win XP, and go to divide manager and disable the IDE
controllers not being used.

Also, if XP is searching for a network connection that is not there,
that will slow things down.

Go to www.google.com and search for 'slow win xp boot'.

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Cheers,

Guy

Hi Bruce,

You may follow the instruction below to determine the root cause of this
issue:

Refer to the Knowledge Base article listed below to perform a clean boot:

310353 How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP --
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310353

If the issue persists after performing a clean boot, I suggest you refer to
the steps below to perform a hardware clean boot:

To turn off your devices
--------------------------

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click System.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then
click Device Manager.
3. Double-click the entire category headings, except "System devices", to
display the devices listed under them.
4. Right-click the first listed device, and then click Properties.
5. On the General tab, in the "Device usage" list, click "Do not use this
device (disable)", and then click OK.

If the Device usage list appears dimmed, the device is necessary for your
computer to function and it cannot be turned off.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each listed device, except for the system
devices and your mouse.
7. Close the Device Manager, and then restart your computer.

After you disable the hardware devices, if you can boot up your computer
properly, there might be a problem with one or more device drivers. Let's
continue with the following steps to determine which device is the source
of the problem

To determine which device is causing the problem
-----------------------------------------------------

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and
then click System.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then
click Device Manager.
3. Right-click one of the devices that you turned off, and then click
Properties.
4. On the General tab, in the Device usage list, click "Use this device
(enable)", and then click OK.
5. Restart your computer. Test to see if the shutdown problem reappears.
6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 until you experience the problem again.

If you determine that a particular device is causing the problem, you may
contact the device manufacturer to obtain updated drivers for the device.

In addition, you can use bootviz to speed up the boot up procedure. You can
search it on the Google.

1. Create a directory named Ptools. Copy Bootvis.exe to Ptools.

2. Start Bootviz.exe.

3. From the Trace Menu, the following traces are available:

Next Boot
Next Boot with Driver Delays
Next Standby/Resume
Next Hibernate/Resume
Note: Tracing Driver Delays during boot will add several seconds of
boot time delay.

4. Select the desired trace Bootvis will prompt with a couple questions
for file naming and looping and reboot the system to take the trace.

5. You have the option of setting a repetition count if taking multiple
traces.
The file name will be named after the trace type with an incrementing
number on the end of the file for each trace.

6. Bootvis sleep will be created in the folder containing Bootvis.exe.
This is a small stub used to start bootivs.exe after a delay after boot
to keep Bootvis.exe from affecting the trace.
Bootviz.exe is a large MFC application.

7. Bootviz.exe will restart and save the trace to the last folder used by
Bootvis.exe. It will then open and display the trace.

Hope it helps.

Best regards,

Terry Liu

I found a great web site that explains a good portion of the programs
running in the task manager. I have had great results getting sluggish
computers to run faster using it. The site is free to use to search the
programs manually or they offer a program to do it for you. You might want
to try to see if you are loading some resource hog. My 500MHz with IDE
drives is slow load XP Pro, but not anywhere near 13 minutes.

I am sorry, that should read 13 minutes! THIRTEEN!!!!

Wow!
W98SE + A7N8X-X + 768RAM + 2x80GB in 11 partitions + XP2800+@stdMHz

Off, Stone cold > Winderz Desktop up and running : 32 Seconds

Go on! Ditch that hideous bloated mound of cyber-blubber, XP, and come
back to 98SE. It's lovely!

It's also old, incompatible with some newer software, has half the
features of XP, crashes more often, and at 32 seconds is 2 seconds
slower than my setup of Win XP.

Well yes, but it's obvious that doesn't bother me. And I only upgraded
from Winderz95b three months ago, so that I could make use of USB.
And, (I don't know how it is with XP), with W98SE I can connect and
disconnect USB devices without having to stop them, or anything.

I read that as "half the things to go wrong".
crashes more often,

Crash? What's that? Or BSOD? Well, the last BSOD I saw, came from
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/bluescreensaver.shtml
(Recommended!) I believe it runs OK with XP.

Ah, but read my other post in this thread concerning BootMenuDelay=3, so
I beat you by One Second. Ha! :-)

Cheers!

I finally found it to be a 2906 SCSI card.
I thought I had taken it out during one of the steps, but I guess that was
while trying to trouble shoot another issue ( his friend tried to upgrade
systemwith an illegal, non bootable CD and did not have one drive for his
IDE and the system kept giving a BSOD 07b. I did a parallel install of XP
and got system working and then repaired the botched upgrade.

Thanks for the help! Now I need to try to get the 2906 to work OK. It is not
even being seen at DOS, so something is wrong....

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for taking the time to update and I am glad to hear that you have
found the root cause.
