There was a time when my system wouldn't take so long to shut down. Someone
please help.

I'm going through that right now. I just build a brand new computer with Windows XP. The installation went without a hitch, and the computer would boot up quickly and shutdown pretty fast. But, two days ago, I noticed that my computer wouldn't shutdown as quickly as it used to, in fact, it would hang at the saving settings screen for a while, almost 30-40 sec (aprox.) before shutting down. I have been searching for a solution and will try some methods out. If anything works, Ill post it here. Good luck.

Correction...my computer takes the most time during the "Windows Shutting Down" screen. I will try those links that were posted thanks!

Problem solved

I utilized the link that Dev gave me and I deduced that I was suffering from iTunes' nefarious GearSec problem. GearSec would hold up my computer's shutdown time to around 30 seconds. After creating the recommended batch file, and pointing GPEDIT to it, my rig shutdown just as fast as it used to. Thanks for the help! (I've uninstalled apple's iTunes!)
