slow programs

I am having problems with windows xp sp1 home edition.
My programs seems to start up slow and when I try to save
they save very slow. I am in a workgroup with the files
saved in another computer running xp professional sp2.
To be more clear I open my program in a workstation and I
have to access my file in the computer running windows xp
sp2. When I start my program is very slow starting up
even though it is installed locally and when I access the
files in another computer is very slow and even slower
when I am finished with the file and I try to save.
Please help
