We have a LOTS of problems with XP on our new Dells. They
run very slowly and lock up repeatedly. Does anyone have
this problem? Has anyone found a solution?

Recommend you contact the people/company (Dell?) who loaded XP on these
machines before warranty period expires.

There are a number of things, you can immediately check.

1 - How much RAM do you have. Practically, you shouldn't
have less than 256Mb (deally 512). XP is a real memory
hog.
2 - Look at the BIOS, id S.M.A.R.T enabled for disk
access?
3 - also in BIOS, what about the cache? that should also
be enabled.
4 - Check CPU usage with task manager. Normally it should
be less than 5%, even with Office or a few other apps
open. If it is much more than, check to see which app is
taking up resources. check the same for the RAM usage.

5 - There are many more optimisations you can do. But try
these for now. RAM makes a lot of difference (personal
experience).

6 - You may have cheap, slow Hard disks. Slow hard disks
will make significant perfomance drops.

7 - Run a defrag to optimise the disk.

After all of these, do what the others suggested, contact
your supplier.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm, WE? They? Did you perhaps network them in a office of something and
DNS is perhaps not configured correctly? This would give those symptoms?

I doubt Dell is the problem but something overlooked or something that was
installed and setup wrong.

Everyone here would need more details and a little history to be of any
help. Easier to contact Dell. They too would need more info, what
installed, what are you trying to accomplish, how did you go about it etc.

DON'T BUY DELLS. DON'T USE AOL. I've heard too many problems with both.

Get serious. Dell builds reasonable computers. Good
solid average computers that work pretty well. And,
although it sometimes takes some effort, you can get
competent technical support from them. I'd feel far
more comfortable with a Dell than one from, say, Best
Buy or CompUSA, or one built by the average local shop.
AOL is fine for those who like the Internet "packaged".

Dell builds reasonable computers?
Maybe you should visit my city's library. (I went there when I didn't have
internet.) Their brand new systems crashed so much.
I've read so many posts from people who have had their Dell systems gone
straight back to Dell to be replaced due to faulty hardware, and botched
installations.

And as for AOL, I say its crappy because many users get responses to their
questions with a simple, "AOL isn't compatible with that, try a different
ISP", or "Sorry, you'll have to get AOL to fix that problem, although you'll
probably have to change ISP."

Basically, it think Dell builds crappy computers, IBM has only a few bugs to
work out on some machines, but if you want a good working, cheap computer,
try HP or Compaq, or even a Ma and Pa shop.
