Slow (or no) shutdown

Can some one please tell me exactly what messages I ought to see when my XP
SP2 Home system turns off? I have slow shutdown problems. I watch the
(Norton) FireWall and Antivirus icons dissapear quite quickly, then I wait
and WAIT, feeling realy vulnerable without them, until eventually it shuts
down. When the screen display goes off, I unplug the computer. But isn't
there supposed to be a message saying it is safe to switch off? I've had
this problem for so long, I can't remember!

I want to disable some less used processes/devices from automatically
starting on startup, but no one wants to give me a list of them and their
names.

One thing that does sometimes help, is going into the registry (via Norton
WinDoctor), and just deleting a couple of the inevitable invalid shortcuts
you get from moving files about! Shutting down soon after that, usually,
works very quickly. It's as if the act of just entering the registry is
enough to sort it out. What's going on?

Hi Jess,

there are a lot of services which are there just to cause systems
slow-downs and are just useless to anyone, that said, check these links:

http://www.blackviper.com under winxp check the supertwaks.htm and
servicecfg.htm

It's a lot to digest, but well worth it.

Also do you have INCD4?? remove it 'cause it causes systems hangs at
shutdown

I have also created a shortcut on my desktop to shutdown windows with a
click, here it is:

shutdown -s -f -t 00 I created a txt file with that in and renamed
shut.cmd

it will shutdown the pc, force any application to exit with no grace
period (I.E. shutdown now!)

hope this helps

Thank you. I found the Black Viper site the other day actually (via Symantec
- I suppose they had to do something right). And thanks for the other tips
too. Before I go, I might as well mention the following, in case it helps
anybody else.

I now know the cause of my problem. Norton's so-called protection corrupted
many of my files, including part of its own Firewall. So far I've only
reinstalled the firewall, and a lot of my problems, including the slow
shutdown one, have been solved. (My other problems will be the subject of
new postings.)

Once again thank you for your suggestions and input.

Although I still don't know why going in and out of the registry made a
difference!?
