Slow Network Printing after SP2

Ever since I installed XP SP2 on my computer, printing
from my computer to an HPLJ1200 that is connected and
shared from my kids Windows 98 machine, has been
EXTREMELY slow. It seems to be just XP trying to FIND
the printer. Once the dialog box is up the actualy
printing is as fast as normal, but the actual looking for
the printer and bringing up the print dialog takes
upwards of 60 to 90 seconds -- each and every time.

Any ideas what it might be and any ideas how to fix it.

I have had the same problem it takes around 30 secs for the printer
selection dialog box to open ??

If you are printing with a non Microsoft application it is trying to
negotiate the XP firewall. A Microsoft application will be quicker, but
still has to negotiate its way through.

I'm having the same problem with slow printing over the network from a
non-SP2 computer to a printer connected to an SP2 computer.

The same 30-40 second delay occurs when trying to access a file on the
SP2 computer from my non-SP2 system.

Anyone come up with an answer for this ???

Bud

We are seeing printing problems on the updated XP systems. Sometimes
slow even printing to a LOCAL printer! Have to set it to "print
directly to printer" instead of spooling.

If you have that option under "Print Properties - Advanced" disable
spooling and print directly!

Let us know if that works. Thanks!

On the computer that is having the problem of the print dialog bo
appearing after 30 seconds, try looking in the printer and faxes folde
of the control panel. See if there are any problems with any of th
printers listed. Remove any printers that have errors or have th
status "Opening". For some reason the print dialog is slow t
determine what to do with these.
