Slow logon to P/P drive

I have 3 pc in my network, 1 w/ Win98Se, 1 XP Pro and 1 with XP Home.
Windows updates done, Firmware on problem machine and router has been
flashed. 2 of the PCs network just fine. The third one, (xp Pro) is very
slow to log on to either of the others. (3 to 5 MINUTES!) the other 2 work
great. The (good) 98 box has a 10 MBPS card, the other 2 have 10/100 and the
router is 10/100. Once the slow machine is logged on it works quite well,
every bit as fast as the other 2. If I let it sit for awhile with out
accessing the other computers it takes a while to get started again. If I
start network places, try to log on to another computer, then start another
instance of network places and try to log onto the same computer it gets it
right away. If I then go back to the orginal network places window with the
hourglass trying to log on its still trying and eventually succeeds.
Internet access from this machine is consistantly nice and quick.
This machine was previously XP Home, had identical problem then. I have also
noticed if I try to access my own drive through "Network Places" it takes
just as long to start. It has had a complete reformat and clean install of
XP Pro. No improvement. All drives are shared, Netbios over TCP/IP is
enabled. Everybody can Ping everybody. No identical names. The 2 other
computers connect to this one normally.
So...
It does connect eventually, so I don't think its a firewall or a
sharing/permissions issue (running Norton I/S 2003 with trusted zones set up
in all machines, tried disabling all firewalls in all machines, including
ICF, no difference)

The internet goes through the same wire and its working great so I don't
think its a cabling issue.

Any thoughts on what I should be checking next? Please feel free to disagree
with either issue I have ruled out above if you think that may be my
problem.
TIA

Sounds like you've isolated the issue to one computer. As far as the initial lag, it may be a driver issue with XP(both Home and Pro). You can check the compatibility of the NIC from the manufacturers website and check for driver updates.

Could also be the NIC itself. You can try replacing the NIC and test the
paradigm again to see if the results are the same.

Hmm. Its an onboard NIC. I will try this, NICs are pretty cheap. Realtek
drivers have been updated from gigabyte website.
