Bob

I had a problem with XP a few weeks ago (missing system file) so had
to reinstall XP. I managed to do this without losing any data files
but certain applications needed installing again. Office went on ok
and generally the PC works fine. However other applications such as my
modem software take for ever to load (3 hours instead of 30 seconds
!). Has anyone any idea what could be causing this ?

Thanks.

No but if you had done a clean install instead of installing over the top
you likely wouldn't have that problem.
But what's done is done. Try doing a repair install instead. You won't lose
any data and you won't need to reinstall your programs.

Hi, Bob.

HOW did you reinstall WinXP? Have you seen Microsoft's instructions for an
"in-place upgrade"? See this KB article:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

Note that this is NOT intended as a timesaver for reinstalling WinXP itself,
but it should preserve your installed applications and data - and most of
your tweaks. Be sure to get your firewall and antivirus back in place
afterward, then go to Windows Update to get the latest Service Pack and
later hotfixes.
