slow folder access

I have an extremely slow folder. It has maybe 1000 very
small jpg's (10-50kb). Windows xp takes maybe 20-30
seconds to scroll from page to page of files in explorer.
Any thoughts on why it takes so long to see this folder?
It seems to be taking forever for the appropriate icon to
show up next to the file.
