Slow Downloads and Frequent Internet Shut-offs

I have home-owned a XP-run Gateway Computer for over 2 years now, and for a
while I have been experiencing problems with my internet. I am using a
wireless internet connection that uses cable internet. My connection speed,
which is displayed in the Wireless Network Connection Status, says it is
running at 11.0 Mbps, but while I am downloading a program, even after
closing all other windows and tasks, the speed never seems to go higher than
50 Kbps. I run both Adaware and Spybot often. Can anyone help me?

Similarly, my internet often shuts down on me. I would be talking online
with other people through AOL, or just playing an online game, when the
internet would simply stop working. Also, the internet would frequently just
stop working, even when I was running nothing but AIM. All I would have to
do to fix this problem temporarily would be to disable and re-enable my
internet connection, but this is quite a pain, especially when playing an
online game.

I would appreciate anyone's help in one or both of these problems.

My old RCA cable modem had a bad power supply, that caused a
connection reset every 5-60 minutes. Comcast told me this is a common
problem, and replaced my modem; the problem has since disappeared.
