Hi all.
My brother has been using win xp pro and everthing has been fine up to last
week when the computer has been switching itself off whilst on the net. For
how much he used that computer he just put up with it. Now the computer has
been getting really slow, and I mean slow. I decided to do something about
it, although I know very little about windows XP, I found a virus called
'blaster' whilst running Nortons antivirus. NAV deleted a couple of files at
my request. I downloaded the patch and the computer was still very slow (no
difference) I used another program and discovered another virus
(w32.wechia.b.exe). I got rid of this as recommended on the programs owners
site. This still didn't make things better as far as speed.
Out of desperation I typed 'msconfig' into the start/run box and although I
dont know what I'm doing pressed the 'launch system restore' button. After
shutting down and restarting, the machine asked me to choose between
operating systems. there is two choices whereas previously I know there was
only one. Both choices are the same system i.e windows xp. One of the
choices allows the computer to work at the speed that it should be(fine),
even when viewing web pages, but it seems there is no networking ect. seems
like it starts ok in, I guess some sort of safe mode? BTW, the mode in which
it runs ok is one where there is no network connection and the task bar is
different (a bit greyed out ). There may be other differences. haven't
checked so I don't know but more experienced users of XP may know.
Question is, how do I want to get rid of the screen that gives me an option
to start in one of two modes and start normally as before with network
support? And what do you think may be wrong that it can run fast speed as it
should in one of the modes but not in the other selection?
TIA for any help
