hi ive got a intel p4 2.8 gig pro.. 512mb ram 256mb graphics card 120
gig hard drive etc which is a very fast machine , it used to boot to
windows xp with in a minute but recently i noticed once the xp pro
boot screen appears the screen goes blank and hangs there for at
least a minute sometimes more and then windows starts , once the
computer boots everythings as quick as normal and shut down is quick
to , ive run tests on me hard drive and other hardware devices and
evrythings fine ..... i know this aint a major prob but im more
curious than anything to the cause of this slow boot thanks to you in
advance if you can help
Besides the other suggestions, the delay may be caused by hardware not
responding or not responding as expected by the drivers for them that
get loaded on startup. Have you tried updating all the drivers for all
your devices (video, sound, chipset, modem, SCSI, IDE controller card,
SATA, etc.)?
Are you booting from a complete shutdown and power down? Or are you
putting the system into hibernate mode?
Does the black screen hang on bootup occur before or after you see the
startup menu? If you don't have multiple OS'es installed, like the
Recovery Console, you will need to hit F8 to display the startup menu.
Press the F8 key after the BIOS POST screen that shows the ESCD table of
devices and interrupts. Then select to load Windows in Safe mode. Does
it load okay in Safe mode? If so, then reboot into normal mode. Don't
know why but some software doesn't complete their install correctly when
rebooting into normal mode after their install but manage to get kicked
in the butt when rebooting into Safe mode and then again reboot but then
into normal mode.

Got any mapped network drives? How many? The more you have, and if
configured to reconnect on startup, then the longer the delay waiting
from them to respond to the reconnect.
