How long should the boot up take...mine has been slow for
months...
Here is my sequence and times:
turn on machine
25 sec
Select XP Pro from my dual boot
40 sec
Win xp pro status bar
45 sec
Black screen
25 sec
Gray screen
20 sec
Desktop comes up

I have tried the following to no avail:
Virus scan
Remove adware with multiple tools
Do clean boot
removed HOtfix 811493

None of this has helped. What should I do? Thanks.

It depends on the computer. On a 1.8 GHz Celeron and a 667 MHz P3, I see it
take about 3 minutes until the login. On my 2.4 Ghz P4 laptop, it takes
about 15 seconds until the login.

That's the hardware test, and not unreasonable (though you haven't said what
the hardware is).

Seems a little slow to me unless it is, say, a 400 MHz machine, or fairly
short on RAM.

On http://aumha.org/freeware.htm I have download and information links for
BootVis, a free utility from Microsoft. Run this.

Thanks I will try BootVis

I am running a Pentium 4 - 1.6GHz with 1.25 G of memory. I just added a G of memory and it did not make a difference at boot time

My bootup was not always this slow. I could try defragging, but I dont think this helps with system files
