I've copied the contents of my Win XP Pro \i386 directory
to a folder on my PC. This is a volume license copy of
XP, so it does not require activation. I mention this
because it is the only explanation I can find.

When i appempt to run xpsp1a_en_x86.exe -s:c:\i386 it
fails with the message: "Integrated install failed. The
language type of platform for the destination directory
and Service Pack 1 must be the same."

I've tried 3 different copies of the SP, including a new
download of it that i just did from Microsoft's Site. And
i've used this XP cd to do numerous installs--and believe
me, it is a 32bit version of plain old english XP Pro
(except for the fact that it is a volume license
version). Any ideas?

with XP>

Are you aware that there are 2 versions of XP1 Pro and SP1? There's
the 'normal build' and the 'checked build' version of both, and the SP1
has to be the same version as the XP you're trying to update.
Could it be that you're trying to use mis-matched versions? Both
versions of SP1 are available here, I think (look carefully!).:

I've them both downloaded (one file is xpsia_en_x86.exe and the other
is xps1a_en_x86_CHK.exe).

You might perhaps do a search on the M$ site for 'checked build' to see
what it's about.

DB.

a) The integration must be run on a machine with WinXP, same build and
language as the one your are updating.
b) The SP1 must be of the same language as the WinXP your are running the
integration on and the WinXP you are trying to integrate.
In other words, if your WinXP machine is English, then the WinXP you are
integrating must be English and the SP1 must be English. No, you can't run
the integration on WinXP Pro OEM on a Win2k, WinNT, WinXP Pro Retail, WinXP
Home or WinXP Pro Volume - at least that has been my experience.
