Slightly OT value question

Matt

We had a transformer blow last night and it fried all of my computer
equipment (even though it was all plugged into a UPS battery backup).
So now I have to estimate the value of my system for insurance purposes
and I'm a little bit stuck on what current market value of my system
might be... so I thought I'd check in here. Here are the Specs:

ABIT KG7
AMD T-BIRD 1400(266MHZ)
KDS 17"/16V AV-7TF
ATI 9500PRO
SOUNDBLASTER LIVE 5.1
1-MAXTOR ATA-100 30 gig
1-MAXTON ATA-133 80 gig
1-256MB PC2700
1-512MB PC2700
3COM 10BT/100BTX NIC
LITE ON 52X/24X/52X CDRW

I'm thinking it's not very much... but hopefully enough to get something
new.

Hmmmm..... no idea.
You might open multiple instances of Pricewatch and do searches
of the name and model number of each component then take not the
cheapest price but the price from a mainstream seller like Newegg or
Tiger or something. You don't want a flybynight to string you along
for months over backordered parts whose prices were too good to be
true in the first place.
Getting a settlement you might do some judicious swapping with the
components, like getting lower latency ram, IF you're looking to reproduce
what got fried.

Yes, you did forget the PS. You also forgot the UPS!
Don't suppose your USP has one of those guarantees?
And does that mean you could collect twice on the system?
Even if the UPS isn't fried I would replace it. It's already shown it's
worth by letting thru a massive inductive spike.

Approximately $400 used, unless you are talking full replacement value.

Full replacement value would be ~$692 (plus shipping, so round off to ~$750)
using similar brands of parts readily available today to perform the same
functions. This assumes you replace the two hard drives with one ~120GB IDE
drive. This also assumes you buy 768MB of RAM. And for that price you'd
get an XP2500 to better match your PC2700 memory and upgrade to a OEM 9600SE
128MB video card with TV Out. You'd end up with a system very similar to
what you lost. -Dave

This one was an APC BE500U... and from what I've heard it's almost
impossible to collect... of course this is just rumor...

Oh Yeah!!! I forgot that CRT monitor was a custom job. He should claim
five grand minimum to replace that baby. :) -Dave

i hate insurance companies with a passion.

My first "real" computer was an Amiga which I paid $3200 for. A week
later I went overseas for a holiday to come back to find an empty house.
Insurance paid an astonishing $1800. Wankers. They derserve everything
they get.

Show them the price of the nearest Dell or Gateway computer. If they do not
like that , show them the price at what you bought the parts for.
