Slideshow problems

I built a great self running show complete with wavs of sound effects and
music, complex animations, etc.

Built it on Win 98/Office '97. Did a Pack-n-Go and brought it to work (Win
XP/Office 2002) and none of the sound files (music wavs) worked. I got
around the problem with one of my programs and deleted and reinserted the
sound files and adjusted timings again to make it work. And then I sent I
e-mailed it to someone - I don't know if it worked or not I have not heard.

Why did I have to rebuild my program?

Also some of the animations didn't work going from 97 to 2002 - same
animations - swivel.

I have several more "chapters" to build and would like to solve this, it
seems as though I have had to tailor make each show for each progam that
runs it.

I also been packaging the viewer that came with office 97, yet one machine I
ran it on (Win XP/Office 2002 - no Powerpoint installed), wouldn't recognise
the viewer.

Should I package the viewer from a newer Office program versus office 97?

As you can see I've got several questions, any help or advice you can give
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Glenna's given you a great suggestion about looking through the PPT FAQ --
you'll find a ton of useful information there, but I don't know if the thing
about sounds not working from 97 to 2002 is covered, so...

PPT 2002/2003 have different animation models than previous versions of PPT
did. Sound playback settings are set on through the animation dialogs in
PPT, and I think that there was a bug in PPT 2002 where it didn't want to
recognize those settings on some sound files set up a certain way. (Can you
tell that I don't remember the details?)

You know, it could also be that the Pack and Go just didn't work the way it
should and so the links to your sound files weren't intact. Now linked files
is something you can definitely read about on the FAQ.
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00155.htm

There's also a problem with recorded narration in PPT 97 Pack and Go.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;168493 And I can't
find it right now, but I thought there was something about Pack and Go
unpacks to a temporary folder, and so it may not read some of the linked
files correctly. This, for instance, references linked photos and PPT 2000,
but I could have sworn there was a similar article about sounds at one
point. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;238192

(See what I mean about not being able to remember the details?!)

Anyway, I suspect it's not anything you did wrong. You might have better
luck next time if you turn off the new animations in PPT 2002. You can do
this on Tools/Options on the Edit tab. That should make PPT 2002 respond to
animation settings (and sound playback settings) as PPT 2000 did. And for
this purpose, PPT 97 and 2000 are essentially the same.
Also some of the animations didn't work going from 97 to 2002 - same
animations - swivel.

Can you define "didn't work"? I ask because I tested here (using PPT 2000
and 2003, though, as I don't have 97 and 2002 installed on this system) and
the swivel worked, but it does look a little different. In 2003, I see the
mirror image of the text as it swivels, whereas in PPT 2000 I don't.

So does your swivel animation simply not work, or does it just look a bit
different than the 97 swivel?

Can't help on that one -- unless maybe you have the exact error message you
received when you tried to unpack the file. Oh, wait. Maybe this.

Should I package the viewer from a newer Office program versus office 97?

If you're using PPT 97, I would download and install the PPT 97 Viewer from
the MS download page (link below) and then do the Pack and Go. The file
should then run as it looked in PPT 97. (It sounds almost as if you're using
the PPT Viewer that came on the Office 97 install CDs. That one is out of
date.)

However, if you're doing your packing and going from PPT 2002, then I would
use the new 2003 PPT Viewer. Problem is, the PPT 2002 Pack and Go won't
recognize that Viewer. You'd have to make the equivalent of an autorun CD
and then zip up those files or create an EXE or something. See PPT FAQ entry
Make an AutoRun CD http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00037.htm and then
http://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/pp2003/ppt2exe.html for the EXE
part.

Probably your best solution will be to turn off the new animations in PPT
2002 as described above, set up your presentation, and then pack and go with
the PPT 97 Viewer from the MD download page.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7c404e8e-5513-46c4-
aa4f-058a84a37df1&DisplayLang=en You need to turn off the new animations in
2002 when you create the presentation because the 97 Viewer doesn't support
those.
