Crash Gordon

Howdy all,

Forgive what might seem a stupid question from a sleeping mime:

For years I've been matching up tiny little images (and some big ones too) to make a graphically pleasing page. Recently I noticed in a Photoshop tutorial a method my pea-sized brain never thought of...design the page (graphically) as one unit then slice it up. Does anyone here use this technique before setting the page elements in FP?

Grumpy

What would the benefit of doing this?

A couple of the drawback are:

1. more items have to download for each page, thereby increasing load time
2. any text incorporated, become un-indexable by search engines

You poor guy.... yeah make a big picture then slice it up. I think PS even
has a tool to help generate the tables.

(If not, there is a program called "slicer dicer" out there that lets you
put lines on the picture and slice it AND make the tables all at the same
time.)

yeah, I got an add-in the other day Image Slicer...I think Tina here led me to it. It's cool.

Have you ever done it for a full page though?

no no...just to cut up the images to create the design elements.
not create the page like Publisher does.

see what i mean?

Ok, but you said "design the page graphically as one unit", to me that meant
the entire page that would be seen in a browser. This I have seen folks do,
using PhotoShop.

Yes, I have.

If you have situations where Graphic Impact is MORE important than download
speed, this can be a great tool.

You can make buttons part of the image and use mouse over effects.

Using the ALT fields to make the topics visible to the search engines seems
to keep that aspect alive.

I have played with making certain cells GIF for download size minimization
and the others JPG. I notice other people doing better at this than I think
I am. There is a sense of design purpose to design ONE image that breaks
down into zones of GIF enough to make the download speed livable.

It is possible to design STUNNING stuff this way.!

That's kinda what I was thinking. Design it as if it were a printed page, then slice it up...DISCARD the un-needed areas that can be dealt with more efficiently with html(whatever)...keep the image areas that I want, convert those to gifs/jpgs and insert them into tables (or whatever)...all this *instead* of trying to make little image pieces fit and work - which now seems convoluted to me. Trying to make gradients match was making me crazy - this seems like a good way to do fancy stuff with less work.

Sorry, but I can't image why you would want to do that at all. With all the
sites I've done I've never seen or thought of a need for slicing. I also
find it annoying to watch a page that has been sliced load. Make your images
and optimize them .... place then on your page ... whole!
Just my 2 cents.

et,

you're misunderstanding me...i'm not talking about slicing the whole page and putting it up that way. see my more detailed explanation above.

gotta go make some money now..

:-)
