When I click on "sleep" all seems to go well and my computer powers off.
30 seconds or so later it starts up again all by itself. How can I
find what's causing this? Also of late when I try to Shut down or
restart nothing happens.

Look in your BIOS for the option LAN wake-up or Wake-up on LAN and disable
it. It is possible that some network traffic is causing your pc to go out of
sleep.

I will try this but I haven't changed any BIOS settings and this never
happened before, either with Vista or XP.

Actually this seems to have solved it. "Wake on OnChip LAN" was
enabled, disabled and seems fine. I can't understand how it was enabled
as I didn't change it and it never woke the computer before.

I've got a similar problem, comes out of sleep when I walk back in the room,
does the BIOS/LAN fix work for hard drives as well as laptops? Where do I
find that LAN setting?
