hi

i have a few users who use a split frontend / backend database in access
2000. the database is beginning to feel a little clunky and slow to the
users.

the database on the clients is 5mb and has been compacted and repaired -
the data file on the server is 192mb.

is it just the way the database has been written as to why it is
starting to get a little slow (assuming nothing other than the size of
the data file has grown since it was first in use - the users say it
used to be instant for most things whereas now they have to wait a few
seconds between updates on various formsm, etc)

1) When last was the server file compacted and repaired?
2) How much more traffic is happening on that network?

ahh .... i take it compact and repair from the client only does the
clients database and not the dataset on the server? ....

so how do you compact and repair the datafile on the server?

as for other traffic its a general file/print server for 40 other folk,
although its gigabit on server/switch side for server and clients are
100mb - the server is 6 months old with dual xeons, a lot of memory and
very fast raid adg disk set running win2k server

i dont think traffic is an issue, most other folk generally just do the
word/excel/print basics with usually much smaller files and general
movement around network of files is very quick.

how does the datafile on the server get compacted and repaired?

If the data resides right within an Access database, then just open the
backend Access file and do the compact and repair like what you do with the
front end.
