single click triggers double-click

My Microsof Optical Wireless mouse keeps triggering a double-click when only single clicking.
I already reinstalled the mouse driver and software, changed the speed settings to fastest but it keeps coming back.
 
This is a hardware problem. Specifically, it sounds like the buttons on the
mouse are too sensitive. Extend the timing for a double-click.

(I had to do the same thing on my Intellimouse Explorer Tilt-wheel mouse.)
