I'm curious about the Celeron 400 mhz performance vrs Geode 300 Mhz with
XPe. Will the Celeron out perform the Geode by much? I'm currently using
the Geode and it's pretty slow. Both will have 256 megs of ram. Currently
I have about a 2 minute boot time on the Geode.

Thanks for the time,
Richard

Hi Richard,

Sorry - I've only just seen your reply to your post about the Geode saying
that you're using one of our development kits. We should have a new official
release of XPe for the SBC-GX1 which includes .NET 1.1 very soon (I'm
working on it/testing it at the moment), hopefully within the next couple
weeks. This also will include a BIOS update which increases the performance
of the GX1 by about 30% (although as you have a custom build, you may have
already been given this). I'm currently seeing boot times of about 1 minute
25 seconds with the new version of our standard image. I assmume someone
from our US team put together the custom build for you, as I'm the only
person working with XPe on our UK team?

Ben,
My custom image, and the Arcom Standard images are about 9 months old. I'm
using the Beta version on General Bios (which is now 9 months old as well).
I'm not using the Custom image, I simply added USB Mass Storage to the
standard image. A Bare MinLogin takes right at 1 minute.

The Celeron will be much faster. In raw computation, the Celeron 400 should
be at least twice as fast as the Geode 300. However, the boot time is not
affected much by processor speed. Network initialization is the culprit.
We have both Geode 300 and Crusoe 933 with XPe. They boot at about the same
speed, but after starting, the Crusoe cleans up.

Thanks, I noticed the same boot time between the Via 733mhz and the Geode
300mhz.
I ran Bootvis, Network accounts for 12 secs, but the rest is Logon Process
at 2 minutes with a stripped Winlogon.
Reckon turning off DHCP and assigning a static IP will speed thing up any?

Richard

Probably won't help. We run both ways, and no one seems to see any
difference. But, its certainly worth a try.
