Since when did this happen?

What a surprise! I just discovered that at the cmd prompt Windows XP
will accept the "/" character in file path names instead of the usual
"\". Since when did this happen? I do a lot of my work at the cmd
prompt and wish I'd known about this sooner. Are there any other Unix
hacks I should know about?

Cmd prompt has done so for some considerable time. AFAICT it substitutes
'\' for '/' in a file string.

Windows itself is not so forgiving and there is one well known video editing
utility that inadvertently included a '/' in a filestring for a temporary
file when producing one perticular type of video output. Needless to say it
stops dead in its tracks with something along the lines of an unable to
create file error.
