I got a copy of Office 2003 as a premium for attending a
Microsoft event. I installed it yesterday, found it to be
unstable, didn't have much in the way of new features, and
I didn't much care for the activation requirement. So I
uninstalled it and reinstalled office 2K.

Since using Outlook 2003, Outlook 2000 will not exit
correctly. I get the "Please wait while Microsoft Outlook
exits" message and it never goes away. I saved a backup of
the pst file before I installed 2003. Falling back doesn't
help. I accessed the back up pst file from a machine that
never had 2003 installed and that doesn't help. I ran
scanpst and that didn't help. I'm stumped.

I would certainly urge caution before using 2003 if you
have any intention of going back to 2000.

Hmm... no new features? How long did you use it?

The problem you are experiencing is because some newer dll's are left lying
around. Did you reboot after uninstalling Office 2003 and again after
installing office 2000? If your version of Windows has system restore, go
back to before you installed office 2003 and reinstall office 2000. if you
don't have system restore, try closing outlook and deleting the mapi32* dlls
and reinstalling or repairing office 2000. You should probably check the
registry for any leftover office/11.0/ keys and delete them too.

I don't believe the problem is pst related, unless you converted rules or
created new ones in the very short time you tried it. Outlook 2002/2003 use
a different rules format and stores them in the pst, but outlook 2000
usually ignored them or deletes them.

You need to uninstall ALL versions of outlook first. Then
go to this location and delete any .pst files you see.
(C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook)
Now, open Control panel and click the mail icon. Click on
email accounts, remove any accounts and click finish.
Next, click on show profiles and remove any profiles in
the window. Click OK and close The control panel. Now you
can reinstall outlook 2k and import your old .pst file.
