Simultaneous editing of Word 2003 Documents

Anyone have any clues about the subject? I don't think SharePoint is a
solution (from what I've read, it's more source control than multi-user
simultaneous editing).

I'm trying "Live Documents" right now, but can't get it to handle a large
document.

I can't believe Word doesn't have a canned ability to allow multiple users
to edit the same document (like Excel does).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Believe it. That's the way it is. We can hope something will be different in
the version that follows Word 2007...
