How can I simulate a corrupt windows PC? I want to show some students
how to diagnose a corrupt hdd and show methods of restoring a failed
system. Are there some system files that can simply be deleted that
will cause a system to fail at boot up correctly? Also can the same be
applies to user profiles? Thanks in advance.

Delete or copy to a safe place the C:\BOOT.INI file.

The error given is misleading, and it's harmless - just replace the
boot.ini file and all is good.

Editing the boot.ini file would work as well.

Sorry, I should also specify that the OS is Windows XP Pro SP2 in a
Server 2003 domain environment.

Cheers.

They don't have boot.ini files?

Ok how about this

Start | Run <type in> services.msc <enter>
and start disabling services - see if they can catch it.

Just use the toy operating system for a little while longer. It's sure to
corrupt nicely.

Let's take a look at your post:
You want to show students, but you're not apparently a teacher.
Why then?

You want them to daignose a corrupt hdd and you want them to show
you how to restore it?

You are obviously woefully ignorant of this situation and either
are a liar here or have no business messing with this stuff until
you learn a LOT more about it.

I highly recommend getting and using the malicious removal tool.

What is wrong with going through the recovery console, imaging the
machines, or using restore disks? And what is wrong with presenting
some real scenarios, exactly?

I never did understand the attitude of the elderly...
