Yicks, I have not used excel for a long time.

How come when I open a new spreadsheet both the rows are columns are
numbered and the
first cell is R1C1. I kind of thought the columns would be a, b, c and rows
1, 2, 3 and the first cell would be A1. However, the first cell is R1, C1.
The cell below r2,c1 and cell to the right r1, c2

I'm sure I have something screwed up.

Thanks.

Thanks Don. It works now as I expected it.

I don't use newsgroups very much, but when I do, it has been amazing how it
works. Years ago, I had a really weird thing I wanted to do on a
spreadsheet once, and I did ton's of research, asked experts and finally,
nearly gave up, but posted it on a newsgroup... probably this one. Got an
answer from some guy in Sweden. "Don't know if this is how it works in
English, but this is how it works on the Swedish version... and it worked.

tools>options>general>uncheck r1c1

.....and there is more to the story. This fixed my problem... thanks.
However, when I used excel the next time, the new worksheet came back r1.c2.
How can I set it not to be the default.

Thanks.

It opened it fine this time. I did not save what I had used the last time.
I only used Excel for a simple calculator function and did not save the
work. It is fine.
