Is there a freeware program to compress mpeg, avi, or wmv files that
is straight forward and easy to use? Any help would be appreciated.

mpeg and wmv files are already encoded ie. compressed.

Check STOIK converter. It has built in freeware and payware version in the
same program. It converts to AVI and WMV, based on the codecs you have on
your computer.

It is simple to use and relatively fast.
