HI,
I have a simple network with several home editions on laptops and a
desk xp pro. Now then, when I had win2000 I had no problem setting up
users, permissions, etc but with xp there is apparently no way to do any
of those things. With XP I have to share folders to everyone or no one.

Is there a way to get xp to work like it's better father, win2000?
It's not like I have shared computers but since we are connected to the
internet I would feel better having only us and not the whole world
sharing my folders even though we have a hardware firewall. I would
appreciate it if anyone can point me in the proper direction.

Thanks,

f.

Go to an explorer window, click Tools -> Folder Options -> View and near the
bottom of the list will be "Use simple file sharing". Uncheck that and
you'll have full control over permissions.

Thanks very much! I did as you said and the XP pro machine worked out
just fine. Unfortunately the home machines don't have 'Folder Options'|
View menu item about simple file sharing. They seem to be stuck with the
all or nothing approach. Perhaps there is a way to add file and folder
permissions to these machines?

XP Home uses simple file sharing which can't be changed. Permissions
can be changed however by booting into safe mode and logging on into the
built in Administrator account.

Thanks for the tip! Now all is well in xppro. Unfortunately xphome
doesn't have that check mark. Is there anything else that can be done
with xphome as the pro machine and the home machine regularly access
each other and also use the others machine for daily scheduled backup.
Although having a hardware router firewall and zonealarm on each machine
it is probably not too likely we'll get hit and emerge as zombies, but
it would be nice to have the extra layer of restricting by user. Someone
once mentioned to me about xp having a bad reputation when it came to
home machines but said there was some addon from MS that turned them
into 'network' pro. I'll check around and see what I can come up with.

Thanks again

As I posted in the previous response you have to boot into Safe Mode and
login on the built in Administrator account for XP Home to set permissions.
