simple comms controller

Hi,
My brother has upgraded from Win 98 to XP, but has had noting but trouble since, not least the whole machine refusing to boot up. It now boots up, but he keeps getting the following messages "simple communications controller is broken" or "hardware manager can't find software for simple communications controller".

Can anyone help with this!

Install updated drivers for the modem.
