Did you check the desktop properties settings? Right click on a blank
area on the desktop and click on Properties>Settings and check the
"Desktop Area" setting.
Control Panel|Display|Settings check that the screen resolution is correct.

This can happen if you turn the monitor on after the CPU is already
powered up; the display adaptor doesn't know what type of monitor is
attached so it defaults to a low resolution. I'm not saying this is what
happened to you, but it could be and a simple restart should fix it if
that is the case.
