i've tried to install simcity 3000 on my windows xp and i get an error message
the system file is not suitable for runing msdos and microsoft windows
applications.
i know there is a way to install and play but i don't know how can anyone
help me with this please.

Start>Execute and copy/paste what is between the quotes:
"cmd /c copy /y %windir%\repair\autoexec.nt %windir%\system32" <hit enter>

If it not "autoexec.nt", then replace "autoexec.nt" with "config.nt"

Depends on which version so "SimCity 3k" you have - the early true DOS
version, the one once installed and you select to play, will reboot the PC
(Win98/WinME) into DOS (Real Mode) and startup the game, and then later
version, opened a DOS window and ran for play.
If you have the latter, you can set the shortcut to run in compatibility
mode (Win98 I believe is the selection to use), but you most likely will
have no sound, as you'll somehow need to load DOS sound device drivers for
your sound card - if you can even find any. If you have the earlier
true DOS version, you are out of luck, unless you setup your PC to dual boot
with XP and Win98 or WinME.

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program

Also can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and
creating registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.

Hi

I assume that is is for autoexec.nt this problem is reported.

Your autoexec.nt problem is most likely caused by a worm or if you have
WinXP SP2 and AVAST (antivirus software) installed, it also can cause
this error.

To solve the problem:

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

Alternatively:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt/config.nt by
copying a backup copy held in %windir%\repair\ to %windir%\system32\
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows) instead of using the procedure in
the KB article above (see further down for instructions on how).

Could be caused a trojan or something similar, e.g.
TrojanDownloader.Win32.Dia.a, more about this here:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

If you want to copy the file from the repair folder, you can use
this procedure:

Open a command prompt, using e.g. Start/Run --> cmd.exe

In the command prompt, type in the following two commands exactly as
you see them in this post (you need to press enter for each command
to execute them):

cd /d %windir%
copy repair\autoexec.nt system32\*.*

Here is a "screen dump" from how it looks when I do it on my computer:

Hi,

That`s weird, I have SimCity 3000 on my XP SP2 computer and had no problems
installing it and playing it, without having to do anything special.
