If I click on either of the "Sign Out" buttons on this page, the page goes
blank for a few seconds and then comes right back, still showing me signed
in. Shouldn't that close the page down completely, or else show me the "Sign
in" button?

Umm WHAT page?
Have a look here:

I thought - "THIS PAGE" was pretty explicit. The page we are now on as we
are reading the posts. - The Windows XP Newsgroup Page/discussions in
Windows XP Basics. Is that clearer?

What you don't understand is that "this page" is really just the web
interface to newsgroups and regulars like Gordon and I don't use the
web interface; we use real newsreaders. So shouting "THIS PAGE"
actually wasn't a good answer, but it isn't your fault because you
didn't understand. And I'm sorry, but I can't help you with problems
regarding the web interface since I never use it.

Here is information to help you understand this particular resource:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are
some links to information about newsgroups:

No. Many of us don't SEE 'this page'. And would never SEE 'this page'. And
don't want to SEE 'this page'. You are using your Internet browser to access
the web page based front end Microsoft uses to provide 'microsoft.public.*
newsgroup content. All the 'microsoft.public.* newsgroups are de facto
Usenet newsgroups, and are accessed with a newsreader, along with perhaps
30,000 other Usenet newsgroups. Outlook Express, provided with Windows XP,
is a basic newsreader.

When you post in a technical newsgroup, take it for granted that when a
responder asks a question, it is intended to help, and has a purpose. After
all, what would be the purpose of posting a question here if there were not
many participants who know more about Windows XP than you?

All the
'microsoft.public.* newsgroups are de facto Usenet newsgroups, and are
accessed with a newsreader, along with perhaps 30,000 other Usenet
newsgroups.

Just an FYI, at my last count, there was like 140,000 total groups.

Not to say they all get traffic, but that's the total number in my reader
from the last time I d/l'd the group list.

Sorry - I didn't mean to shout. I simply wanted to emphasize those two words
because I thought perhaps the reader had skimmed my post and missed that
part. Thanks for the info about the newsgroups. I did not understand that
others reading these posts did not see the same thing I saw. Trying to
absorb all this new technology, figure out the new security software
softwares etc. is about to blow my mind, now I guess I have to figure out
Newsgroups too. The information highway is like a Nascar race with me in a
Ford Pinto (and I can assure you that I am no dummy). There is so much to
absorb and new stuff coming out every day.

Do you have a firewall like Norton Security. Firewalls are sometimes the
cause for strante behavior on the internet.

The main thing is that you don't need to know everything about Windows XP,
or even a small part. Use a logical, calm approach. Take notes.
Troubleshooting a computer platform (that is the combination of a computer
and an operating system) is much like differential diagnosis or
trouble-shooting any field. It's all in the approach. Experience and
knowing where to get help is important. But the approach is primary.

Unlike working on a Pinto, most troubling shooting and problem solution for
a computer system involves 'soft' changes. Once you understand the problem
is usually easy to fix. And, unlike a Pinto, the gas tank won't explode.

Not really. Most of us use a newsreader (Outlook Express, Thunderbird,
X-News, Forte Agent, etc.) to access these newsgroups. There are
absolutely no "pages" involved, whatsoever. We avoid the web interface
that we now know you're using (had no reason to check your message
headers until now), because it's very slow and awkward to use, and has
very limited search capabilities.

are reading the posts. - The Windows XP Newsgroup Page/discussions in

Well, now that you've provided a modicum of pertinent information, yes.
However, I can't answer the question; contact the administrator of the
web site (Microsoft, in this case) for problems with a specific web page.
