When looking at the security tab on a NTFS drive the SID's
are displayed for quite a long time before the usernames
appear? Any Ideas?

Due to a number of reasons, the SIDs are not resolved to "names". This
could be a result of poor name resolution as a result of a number of
topology issues, or could be a result of latency for a number of other
reasons.
