How is a WindowsXP side-by-side install done? I want to be able to start
WindowsXP and get to the current version which is corrupt, so that I
can retrieve my files. Thanks.

Boot with CD.. Install onto the same partition as the current Windows XP,
but different directory and different usernames. You may have to take
ownership when you are done..

Any reason just a repair installation won't help?

If possible I would try the Repair Install first.

I get an error message: Windows XP cannot recognize the partition you
selected.

I tried that. This is where I run into trouble:

# Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press
R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, read this
Warning#2! <-------- R is not an option.

Did you try the fix from the repair install page.
Possible Fix by reconfiguring boot.ini using Recovery Console.

1.Boot with XP CD or 6 floppy boot disk set.

2. Press R to load the Recovery Console.

3. Type bootcfg.

4. This should fix any boot.ini errors causing setup not to see the XP OS
install.

5. Try the repair install.

One more suggestion from MVP Alex Nichol

"Reboot, this time taking the immediate R option, and if the CD letter is
say K: give these commands

COPY K:\i386\ntldr C:
COPY K:\i386\ntdetect.com C:

(two other files needed - just in case)

1. Type: ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\boot.ini DEL C:\boot.ini

2. Type: BootCfg /Rebuild

which will get rid of any damaged boot.ini, search the disk for systems and
make a new one. This might even result in a damaged windows reappearing; but
gives another chance of getting at the repair"

What do I type after bootcfg. I get I message stating to use one of the following:

/ADD /REBUILD /SCAN /LIST /DISABLEREDIRECT /REDIRECT

OK, I did that. 1 Windows install was identified. I have to add it to
the boot list, right? What do I put for Load Identifer and OS Load Options?

That's what rebuild should have done.
Could all of these problems ave anything to do with the fact that I had
used System Restore to try to remove Service Pack 2. That is when the
problems started. I hang on a black screen after the logo screen
whenever I try to start Windows XP now. I know the Service Pack is still
there, because the logo screen loading bar is now purple. Also, when I
try to use Safe Mode, the Safe Mode screen has, "Build
2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158: Service Pack" written at the top, and the
screen hangs". Maybe Service Pack 2 is now stuck between an install and
a removal. Perhaps if I could remove Service Pack 2 somehow this problem
would go away.

Yes, that is possible. Restoring to a point before installation of SP2
without first uninstalling SP2 is NOT recommended.

If restoring to a point before installation of SP2 without first
uninstalling SP2 is the cause of my problem, is there any way to fix
it, without losing all of my data?
