I have a dual install of WXP Home. each one on a separate drive.
The spare one was created by copying the boot partition from the primary drive
(c
on the secondary drive (g
.
After a windows crash, the primary install broke down. It is not recoverable.
The idea is to reinstall the c: drive with a clean install
Problem :
The spare install is still running but is older and share components with the crashed install. They are still launched and exe'd from the c: drive.
g: is system drive, c: remains the bootdir in the registry. I am reluctant to change it because I'll probalbly lose my spare install if I do so.
the Main shared components and services are
Windows Installer : still works on the c: drive. can't get it to work on g:
WMI. Likewise can't move the wbem logs to g:
the COM+ components
MSDTC
some control panels : users,
the restore utility
All of these are processed on or from the c: drive
What kind of surgery is necessary?
