Shutting Down Vista

When i try to shut down, the shut down screen freezes and my computer doesn't
turn off. I have to press and hold the button on my box to be able to do
this. But this just doesnt feel good to me as it may be damaging my pc. What
is strange is that when i put it back on windows loads up automatically as
though it had been shut down properly. I have microsoft vista home premium,
ive only just bought this computer a month ago and I fear to do anything
silly that may make the situation worse. I have tried disabling a lot of the
start up programs which other posts have suggested improves shut down but
this hasnt worked. I have deleted the drivers that i had first installed onto
the pc which i felt that might of been a cause of this too. Another strange
thing about this is that for the time period that i have used this pc when i
shut down it generally does it when i log out and my mum or sisters log into
there accounts and then try to shut down, however this may not be the reason
why as its just a suggestion. I have scanned my computer for viruses, spyware
the lot so this isn't the cause. so i am really unsure of what to do, i'm 18
years old and don't have a great knowledge of what to do and have no idea of
what to do, so if anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly welcome
and appreciated. Thanks.

I have also found this problem within the problem reports about 11 times,
whcih may be the cause I ahve no idea does anyone know what I could do thanks.

I have seen a few computers seem to hang upon shutdown. On these, I just
leave them be and walk away for a few minutes (I have seen it take 15
minutes for one to shut down). Usually one correct shutdown will correct the
condition. If you don't allow it to shut down normally, every shutdown will
hang.

I was talking with one customer who left his computer on over night in this
condition. When he woke in the morning his computer was off. He never had
any problems after that.

It seems like something just gets hung and it takes the O/S a very long time
to resolve the condition and shut down.

Hi Andy--

If you have to hard button shutdown, closing all Windows and programs first
will prevent the small chance that doing this repeatedly might injure
restore points or much later, your hard drive.

The causes for this can ben many and this is not an uncommen problem. Vista
was rushed out the door so that it could be shippped, and many many features
were left on the cutting room floor and cut from the Betas and even before
the betas began because they felt like they ran out of time.

The philosophy at MSFT was that they had many well done features, so cutting
the corners on some of them was justified.

There could have been more work on shutdown and startup, and many times
shutdown problems occur because in the background Windows is trying to start
again.

These instructions work in XP, and might help in Vista. The article is the
best out of several I have collected over the years for shutdown hangs. I
have found the MSKB and AUMHA's not to be helpful.

I've found this one to be the most helpful:

Troubleshooting Windows Shutdown Problems
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Troubleshooting-Windows-Shutdown.html

There are 2 or 3 shutdown hang articles here I've found not to be helpful at
all:

http://support.microsoft.com/search...=false&title=false&kt=ANY&mdt=0&comm=1&mode=a

This one I've found not to be helpful and it's an MSKB from MSFT and deals
with a narrow issue on XP granted but it could be replicated in Vista if you
had that Toshiba audio service.

FIX: The shutdown procedure takes a long time to complete
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822738

Additionally this can help but generally on Vista boxes I find the
checkmarks aren't in the boxes that I want to make sure you remove:

Type "devmgmt.msc" in run box(lose quotes)>and in Device Manager>click USB
controllers>rt. click each USB root hub>properties>Power Management tab>take
checkmark out of the two boxes there.

Good luck,

CH

Andy--

When you say you've found "this problem within the problem reports" where
specifically did you find it linked to shutdown problems? Is it in event
viewer. I can find no reason that this information has any impact on your
shutdown hang and "problem within the problem reports and this list of
information doesn't inform a shutdown hang for me.

Can't tell you how much I appreciate your help guys, so cheers for that, I'll
use your advice, I'll post again if the problem arises again.

Richard--

This would be a sound strategy when it works. But it's not practical for the
many people with shutdown hangs who need to use their computer, and 15 hours
later it hasn't changed.

No tried all these things none seemed to help really, I had 3 very quick shut
downs when I shut down from my own area. But when I logged off and allowed
someone else to log in and then try to shut down it didn't. I waited for the
whole night and nothing. It seems to not shut down properly when the logging
off is used.
I think the problem is my printer, as this printer was what I used for my
windows xp computer, and is not compatible with vista. It is the HP PSC 1215,
it works fine but I cant access any of the programs installed from the
previous disc. I don't think I'll uninstall it, just won't log off, as it
seems to shut down fine if you don't. Just have to wait for HP to update this
driver I suppose.
