shutting down processes in XP pro

I"m running XP Pro...I luv it...but this is only a home
pc...I have no use for any of the networking stuff.I
noticed ALLL the processes running in background...id
like to know which ones are safe and still healthy to
shut down or to keep from booting all together if
possible...Id like to shut down as many as possible.I
just had this pc built for Flight Sims.I have a fast
syytem...but with Microsoft Flight Sim 2004...wants all
the power it can get..ha ha!Please help.Thanx!!
