Shutdown

When I shutdown Vista, the process never gets as far as powering down the
hardware.

This was never a problem on the same hardware with XP and is not initially a
problem with Vista (both times I've installed it) but starts and remains
afeter a short while.

Any ideas?

Vista Ultimate.

Since the problem doesn't begin with Vista installation, it's possible
something else you are installing, hardware, software, driver installation
might be the source of the issue. Can you backtrack to pinpoint when it
began to try to find what item might be the source.

You might also check the Event Viewer under Administrative Tools. Go
through the various tabs, since this happens each time you shutdown, if
there's something listed, it will likely be repeated and the error may point
to the source of the issue.

Hi Jasper,

Even with XP (or w2k), this is usually caused by a driver hanging on
shutdown. You most likely have a buggy driver that is hanging and not
allowing the OS to completely shut down. The reason you didn't
experience it in XP is that the driver was properly written for that OS
and isn't the case with Vista.

Try Control Panel, Power Options, Choose What the power buttons do.
 
I've got the same issue and unfortunately nothing in the event log provides
any clue (last thing I see is that computer entering sleep, but it never
actually does). I don't think the standby/shutdown troubleshooter exists
for Vista or I might be able to get a handle on which driver is preventing
proper standby/shutdown.

I suspect until enough folks have b*ed to Microsoft and they update the
troubleshooter we're all going to be sucking it up (or the device
manufacturers figure out that their drivers aren't working properly).

Hard part is, by force shutting down nothing ever gets reports by Vista so
it's going to be a bear to nail it down.

That just allows you to tell Vista whether or not you want to shutdown,
standby, or hibernate (as appropriate for your hardware). It doesn't allow
you to force unload a stubborn driver, nor does Vista log a troublesome
driver preventing it from shutting down or standing by (Microsoft used to
have a troubleshooter you could install in 95 and XP to nail down the
offending hardware device and get it to log the standby/shutdown process but
it doesn't appear that this is available for Vista).

Thanks, everyone.

It was an XP driver (for a Tascam sound module - Vista version out in May).
Fortunately, I only installed it today, so it was fresh in my mind. Nothing
in the event log though.

You could try removing drivers and devices one by one and test after each
removal whether or not you can than shut down the system.

Quite so, but setting Shutdown to do nothing is an option!
