Hi,
i have an older laptop (Compaq Presario) that had Win98 pre installed.after
several attempts to install a network adapter, i decided to upgrade to WinXP
HE.Everything went fine installed the adapter without any probs and got all
theWindows updates too. But now the computer won't completely shut down by
itself. just shuts down to a point and then shows the xp logo and says "its
now safe to shut down your computer"It always shut down completely before,
how can i get this pc to shut completely down by itself as this is very
frustrating always waiting to turn off the power switch?

I don't know about a laptop but the following worked for me on
an old desktop PC.

Go to Control Panel and double click "Power Options".
In "Power Options", look for a tab titled APM.
Click on the APM tab and put a check mark in the box next to
"Enable Advanced Power Management support".
Shut down your computer and see if you get the desired results.

Good luck
