I've never had a problem shutting down before but I've
just been to the m/s update page and done all my updates
and now when I shut down it takes like 30+ seconds from
the issue of the command to final shut down. Normally it
took a matter of seconds.

Hoe can I get my shut down speed back to normal please?

There is a certain patch that causes registry unload problems but I
forget which one. Which patches did you apply? Look in the Add/Remove
Programs in the control panel and you will see references to the
patches. Post the numbers here and someone may point you to the patch
that causes this. Alternatively you may try removing the patches one at
a time and see if the problem is resolved after the removal of a certain
patch. Then reinstall the patches except for the offending one.

Thanks for the help.. I was wondering if anyone knew the
registry key and maybe alter it manually? If not, here
are the patches i installed:

KB820888
KB822831
KB823182
KB823559
KB824105
KB824141
KB824146
KB825119
KB826232
KB828035
KB828749
KB829558

Thanks once again for any help you can give me.

I don't readily see anything there that would cause the slow shutdown.
The patch I was thinking of is earlier than any of these. Did you look
in the event log to see if anything is showing there?

I am having a problem with sht down also after downloading some of the same patches you did. My computer won't shut down at all. It goes through the process then my screen is dark with a flashing cursor and the computer is still on. Only way to shut it down is to use the button. Wish you luck on your problem.

try this

goto Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs > Change/Remove Programs
and see if Q329170 is listed as an update if it is remove it.

plus

start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative
Template
System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user
profile ... set
enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!

There appears to be a hotfix available from MS (thanks Neo)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814770

but you will have to telephone MS to order it.
