shutdown woes

not sure if I in the rigt group but I have annoying problem that happens
every now and then! I'm running win xp and every now and then after playing
something like everquest 2 for a few hrs I find that I need to wait for at
least 7 mins before I can shut down if I don't then windows will just hang
part way through and will just be stuck on the windows is shuttingdown
screen! even then on the odd occasion I will still get it, the only way out
is to reboot then it will shut down with no problem!

anyone know what could be the cause of this? 90% of the time if I leave it
for 7 mins or so I shut down with no trouble but on the odd attempt it will
still hang regardless! I was thinking of using the online panda scanner which
is £8 for 6 mth use but not sure what it's like and if it's any good! any
replies that may shed light on this is welcome
