| Whenever I go to shut my computer down it restarts itself
| back up again. I have to keep using the power button to
| shut it down, then when I start it up again it goes into

Hi Bob -
It's likely you have an application that's crashing at shutdown and, because
the Blue Screen of Death is "hidden" by default under Windows XP (with
Control Panel | System setting to reboot), you aren't seeing the BSOD and,
instead, your computer is rebooting.
You can go into Control Panel | System | Advanced | Startup and Recovery and
disable the restart on error option in order to see the BSOD. This may help
you zero in on the application that's crashing.
Otherwise, perform a Selective Startup exercise. Click on Start | Run and
type MSCONFIG. In the Startup tab disable each item, one at a time, and
reboot your system. Once the system is completely booted shut the system
down. If the reboot continues, go back into MSCONFIG and re-enable the last
application and disable the next and repeat. Hopefully you'll be able to
find the program running in the background that is crashing at shutdown ...
at which time you can look to the manufacturer for an updated version.
If you have always on broadband internet without a router with a hardware
firewall, turn off your modem before performing the Selective Startup
exercise. At some point you will be restarting your computer with no virus
software and possibly no firewall software active and you could potentially
pick up a worm or other nasty when starting.
Hopefully this will help you identify the problem.
