Hoping someone out there has the solution.. i cannot
shutdown my computer through the start,, shutdown
option. I have to shut it down manually using the button
on the tower, i have used the adaware program, i also
have scan disk and defragmented my hard drive on a
regular basis. Does anyone know what else i can do?, my
os is Windows XP. I also have Nortons System works 2003.
Thanks.

Not with XP, but had a similar issue with ME. By
downloading the latest bank of updates, the issue was
solved. The system has worked fine ever since. My 'geek'
tells me this is very common.

If you mean that you get to 'it is now safe to turn off' and then have
to do it manually, A probable cause is that your installation found the
BIOS does not adequately support the 'Advanced Configuration & Power
Interface' (ACPI). It then installs the older APM, but leaves it
disabled. Go to Control Panel - Power Options, and if there is an APM
page, check 'Enable APM' on it.

If it is some other failure in shutting down, Look at the extensive
troubleshooter at James Eshelman's page: specific XP section at
www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm
