When I shut down my computer the image (windows shutting down) still appears
on the screen and I have to press and hold the button to totally shutdown the
computer. Is there any solution to my problem, can this be corrected?

This usually means that a program running in the background is refusing
to exit gracefully. Since you've given basically no information about
your computer or what's running, I can't guess. However, you should run
through the normal troubleshooting steps:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since
they complement each other. You may also want to run CWShredder and
HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm. Although CWShredder is
no longer being updated, it will still clean older variants of the
CoolWebSearch malware. Always read the instructions before running a
spyware removal tool. Be sure to update these programs before running,
and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete
temporary and Temporary Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary
services/programs from starting with Windows - see www.blackviper.com
for services info and www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for
programs info; 5) look in Event Viewer for clues; 6) make sure you've
visited Windows Update and applied all security patches. Do not install
driver updates from Windows Update; 7) run a firewall.

Once you've done the above, if you are still having problems do a clean
boot to narrow down the application that is hanging.

Sometimes happens if you have older ISA cards installed.

I'm having the very same problem as Manuel. I'm using a brand new computer,
with a freshly installed Windows XP Pro x64. Once it gets to shutting down
windows screen, it stops. Since it's a fresh install, there are no extra
programs installed. I checked what's running in the background and I cannot
find anything that might be causing this problem. When it gets to that
shutting down screen, it does sound as if something is infact shutting on
inside my computer, sounds like that hard drive (sata). Any other ideas on
this would be very much appreciated.

You should check in with the XP64 news group. It may be the motherboard
drivers need updating.

I hate to resurrect such an old problem, but....
I have the same symptoms. The shutdown process proceeds normally until the
very end. At that point the power light turns off, but the PC (HP Pavilian)
hangs with the screen still displaying its 'windows is shutting down'
message. The mouse and ‘Alt-Ctl-Del’ gone at that point so I can't check
anything. I have to hold down the power button to force the shutdown. It
looks like a problem that was known and fixed in XP SP2. But I am already at
XP SP3.

I suspect a driver was corrupted during an auto update (bad choice). But I
don't know which it would be. (Which drivers are still operating at that
point in the shutdown.) Option? Brute force (reinstall SP3)?

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleaner
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en).

If that doesn't work, you can try doing a System Restore back to a point
before you were having the problem.
