shutdown problem

I've just installed Windows X

The shutdown problem is that shutdown just doesn't work. The system doesn't shutdown even with command shutdown.exe -s. I've read the links provided by Roger to other users but cannot find a solution.

I would appreciate any hint

Goto Control Panel
Then Power Options.
Systems with newer power management will show a Hibernate tab there.
Some older systems have a APM tab.
If you find it check the box to enable APM features (including
auto-shutdown).
If you don't have a APM tab, take a look in Device Manager. Under View,
select to show hidden devices.
Look in System for NT Legacy APM.
If it's there, enable it.
