Shutdown, not hibernate...

I have a laptop that when I go to shut it down, I have to choose shutdown
from the drop down menu.
Hibernate is displayed here currently.
Is there a way to have shutdown appear by default?

Huh? My shut down options don't have a drop down menu.
There are simply three buttons -- standby, turn off and restart.
If I want to hibernate I need to hold SHIFT, which automatically
replaces the standby option with the hibernate option.

The drop down menu sounds more like the menu found in
Windows 2000, not Windows XP.

No, it is an XP machine.
